How Can Artists Play The Social Media Game?

OK artists, designers and makers – how can we ‘play’ the social media game?

First of all, STOP GEEKING OUT ON SOCIAL MEDIA – stop using it to check out what your friends are doing, stop ‘surfing’ it, stop wasting time on it. You have to reverse your thinking and spend the time working out how to make it work for YOU and your art practice.

I call it my social media ‘game‘ because:

  • its “a form of competitive activity or sport played according to rules” – yes its competitive if you make it so…but hey, lets break the rules here!
  • its “an activity that one engages in for amusement” – yes one has to engage, but its for our gain, not our amusement.
  • we are “eager or willing to do something new or challenging” – yes lets make this a challenge for ourselves.
  • its “a complete episode or period of play, ending in a final result” – yes lets make it about building a result that we want.
  • its “a type of activity or business regarded as a game” – yes lets ‘play’ social media at its own game!
  • you need a strategy and you have to work out how you are going to make it ‘win’ for you.
  • its “a secret and clever plan or trick” – if you don’t know the tricks behind social media, then you dont know how to play it!
  • its a way to “manipulate (a situation), typically in a way that is unfair or unscrupulous” – oh yes sireee it is, social media is totally unfair and unscrupulous and I have a whole lot more to say about that.

Now I’ve got a theory that Social Media is in fact just one big SWINDLE and you can check out what I have to say about that by watching my Mentorsmith Tips #3 video….
